$9 BARK Gift Subscriptions

I received this offer with my last BARK issue and thought I'd pass it along.

It appears you don't have to be a current subscriber to give an unlimited number of $9 one year subscriptions (that's six issues). We feed our doggies Avoderm and they run $5 off coupons pretty much every issue, so it pays for itself!

Check out: www.thebark.com/subscriber

We've enjoyed the magazine... in fact we, too, received it as a gift...

... truly something to BARK about!

Tailgate Approved?

I'm not sure who at Kroger thought it was a good idea to place the doggie cutout on top of the bbq grill, but it sure made for one odd display.

Kinda gives "hot dogs" a new twist, huh?

Dogs & Hearts

"It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart.

If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are."

The New Foster: Cher!!

Cher, a 2-3 year old chocolate female

One look at me and… “I got you, babe!”

In between autograph sessions and meetings with my stage management (a.k.a. my foster team), you’ll find me searching for my forever home. You see, life on tour has been fun but I prefer to settle down into a loving home where I can entertain on a smaller scale while I write my memoirs.

My figure? I wear my 65 pounds very well – especially since I’m shorter and more compact than most Labbys. Regardless, don’t let my short stature fool you – I have big eyes for food, lovin’ and will get in the middle of the action – especially if toys are involved!

And manners? Sugar, I wrote the book! I know how to sit like a lady for that perfect pose, like the one Santa took with me. I only get on furniture after being properly invited and prefer to sleep in my crate at night with the door open. I’ve received 5 out of 5 stars for perfection going potty outdoors so I’ve earned the loving trust of my staff and have free reign of the house along with my two Labby co-stars (they continue to get into trouble while I set the positive example).

I get along with other celebrities but I prefer captivating you all center stage where I can bask in the spotlight.

Sound like a life-long match? Reach out to my managers and let’s connect for coffee!

Here Comes POGO!

Hi Y'all,

Our first foster experience went great and we're going back in for #2.

POGO joined our pack October 23rd.

POGO's a black lab 3-5 years old. He has a super shiny coat and a fancy for fetching.

In just a few days, we've realized what a special pup he is; he doesn't get on the couch or bed (even tho his foster brothers do), he's fully house-trained and he sleeps in his crate with the door left open.

His name, you ask? We'd nicknamed him POGO because when he gets excited, he jumps UP, but not on anything. He's like a vertical jumping machine!

If you're interested in POGO, or know someone who is, please email us right away!

Our First Foster!

We have a new foster who joined the lab pack on September 6th.

"Marigold" is a 10 month old yellow lab who came to us from DFW Lab Rescue. Her formal name we've given her is Goldie von Ruffhousen.

She's sweet, crate-trained, non-food or fellow-dog aggressive.

Goldie enjoys playing keep-away from her older brothers Boomer and Harley. She loves making eye contact with her humans and gives wet kisses and is a lover. She enjoys sleeping in the bed when she's not in her crate!

I'm told a yellow female pup will go fast so if you know anyone who is looking for a sweet soul please get in touch with me. She'll be a great addition to the right family!

Welcome Goldie!

11:00 pm - Sleeping on the bed! My favorite thing!

A CAT's DIARY

Day 983 of my captivity.

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape.

In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. Bastards!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches.

The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

We've been active in SPCA events for several years. Now we're going to try to give back to the loving organization that gave us our Harley. It's an exciting time and I'm sure allot of tears of sadness and joy will be shed.

Both my Kroger and Tom Thumb Rewards cards are linked to SPCA and Lab Rescue. You can do the same. Just check out their websites: http://www.dfwlabrescue.org/ and http://www.spca.org/ . If you have trouble online, just stop by the customer service desk at the stores.

Considering Adoption?

Hey, Dog Lovers,

Harley's special foster mommie Marcia sent me the original Craig's List post below regarding rescue dogs. It's very moving. If you know of anyone considering saving a rescue dog, please have them read this. If they have a heart of gold, there will be no question which direction to head in!

We adopted our precious Harley, shown at right, from DFWLRR (Dallas Fort Worth Labrador Retriever Rescue) and have cherished every moment of it -- except for the "sucker punches" when his paws meet your belly when jumping full force. We're working on that. :)

You can easily Google the breed of choice with the word "rescue" after it and usually find a rescue organization that can help match you to the perfect companion.

Hats off to the foster families out there who unselfishly give their time, their homes and their hearts to providing a safe haven for these precious souls at a time when they need it most!

ORIGINAL POST

Note to adopters:

Lassie, Cleo, Rin Tin Tin and Toto don't show up in rescue. We don't get the elegantly coiffed, classically beautiful, completely trained, perfectly behaved dog. We get the leftovers. Dogs that other people have incompetently bred, inadequately socialized, ineffectively "trained," and badly treated. Most Rescue dogs have had it. They've been pushed from one lousy situation to another. They've never had proper veterinary care, kind and consistent training, or sufficient company. They've lived outside, in a crate, or in the basement. They're scared, depressed and anxious. Some are angry. Some are sick. Some have given up.

But we are Rescue and we don't give up. We never give up on a dog. We know that a dog is a living being, with a spirit and a heart and feelings. Our dogs are not commodities, things, or garbage. They are part of sacred creation and they deserve as much love and care and respect as the next Westminster champion. So please, please don't come to rescue in the hopes of getting a "bargain," or indeed of "getting" anything. Come to Rescue to give, to love, to save a life -- and to mend your own spirit. For Rescue will reward you in ways you never thought possible. I can promise you this -- a rescue dog will make you a better person.

Doggie Cookie Recipe

Watch your dog flip with joy with these awesome doggy cookies. They are easy to make, bake and give as gifts!

Ingredients:

[ 2-1/2 cups ] white corn meal (or rice flour)
[ 1-1/2 cups ] all-purpose flour
[ 1-1/2 cups ] fruity pebbles
[ 3 tbsp. ] vegetable oil
[ 2 ] egg whites, beaten
[ 1 cup ] warm chicken or beef broth

Instructions:

1. In a large bowl, blend together the corn meal mix, flour, and fruity pebbles.

2. In a smaller bowl, mix the vegetable oil, eggs and broth.

3. Then, mix together the ingredients in the two bowls and roll out the dough to 1/2" thickness.

4. Using fun-shaped cookie cutters (like dogs bones, cats, mailman, etc.), cut out cookie shapes out of the dough. Brush the cookies with broth and place on a greased cookie sheet or parchment paper.

5. Bake the cookies at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.

6. Turn the oven off and return the treats to the cooling oven for several hours to make them crunchier.

Makes: 3-4 dozen doggie cookies and several happy doggies!

Note: the variety of colors caused by the fruity pebbles makes these treats perfect for birthday or gift-giving celebrations.

If you'd like to experience other fun treats to make with your canine friends, click here and purchase the "You Make 'Em" Dog Biscuit book - we did, and you'll be glad you did!

Enjoy!
